Introduction

This task has been assigned by Archita ma'am as part of our classroom activity for unit 3 & 4 : Translation studies. The purpose of this is to give us hands-on experience in translating a paragraph from gujarati or hindi fiction into English. Through this exercise, we not only practice the skill of Translation but also reflect on important aspects such as equivalence , untranslatability , cultural gaps , and the effectiveness of Translation tools. This Blog is my response to the given task.

’પેટ બળ્યાં વેઠાય પણ હૈયાં બળ્યાં ના વેઠાય’ એ ન્યાયે આ વેદના-વ્યથાથી અંતે કાળુ ભાંગી પડે છે પણ રાજુનું માતૃત્વ કાળુને પુનર્જન્મ આપી બેઠો કરે છે અને માલીનું તેનો વહાલેશ્રી નાનીયો નરકમાંય લોહી પીવા ઈચ્છે છે ત્યારે કાળુ જ ખાંપણે પહોચાડે છે. ’વાવે તેવું લણે’ ના ન્યાય સાથે કાળુની માણસાઈના પુનર્જન્મ સાથે નવલકથા પૂરી થાય છે. ગ્રામસૃષ્ટિનું, ડુંગરોનું, ભીલોનું, દુકાળનું, મેળાઓનું, ગાણાનું એમ વિવિધ વર્ણનો સાથે ’ચેતમછંદર’, ’દોહ્યલા દન', 'ખાંડણીયામાં માથાં', 'પરથમીનો પોઠી’, ‘ઉજડે આભલે અમી’ જેવાં સ્વતંત્ર વાર્તાઓનો અનુભવ કરાવતાં આડત્રીસ પ્રકરણોમાં આ નવલકથા પૂરી થાય છે.




Translated  Paragraph :-


With the saying 'Even if the stomach burns, the heart does not burn', Kaalu finally breaks down from this pain and suffering, but Raju's motherhood revives Kaalu and makes him sit up, and when Mali's beloved Naniyo wants to drink the blood even in hell, Kaalu himself delivers it to him. With the saying 'Sowing like a weed', the novel ends with the rebirth of Kaalu's humanity. With various descriptions of the countryside, hills, Bhils, famines, fairs, and songs, this novel ends in thirty-eight chapters, giving the experience of independent stories like 'Chetmachandar', 'Dohyala Dan', 'Khandaniyama Matha', 'Parathamino Pothi', 'Ujde Aabhale Ami' . This novel ends in thirty-eight chapters that provide an experience of independent stories like this .




Context Behind the paragraph:-

            I'll choose this paragraph from a novel  'માનવી ની ભવાઈ ' which is written by પન્ના લાલ પટેલ  . 
So the main reason of choose this Paragraph is that this paragraph have so many cultural word like વેઠાય, નરકમાય , વાવે તેવું લણે etc. And i want to test my self that should I am able to translate that kind of words and this paragraph is signifies the language of the people in that ancient time .That's why I'll choose this paragraph .


Briefing the book :-


        This novel was written by pannalal patel in 1947 . In this book he wrote about the dearth which is happened in 1856 . In this novel author described the situation of that dearth . How was the lifestyle at that time, how was the love stories at that time etc. The main character of this novel is Raju and Kalu . And the villain character is mali doshi . Raju and kalu got married in there childhood but mali doshi broke there relationship . After that kalu married to gheli and raju married to Vaghji . In short this story is showed us how people lived in that situation.  The rituals of that time etc. 



Author:- 

 Pannalal Patel was a renowned Indian author known for his significant contributions to Gujarati literature. Born on May 7, 1912, in Mandli village, Dungarpur, Rajasthan, he wrote over 20 short story collections and 20 social novels, including the acclaimed works "Malela Jeev" (1941) and "Manvini Bhavai" (1947). Patel's writing often depicted rural life in Gujarat, exploring themes of love, social issues, and human struggles ¹.

Plot:- 

"Manvi Ni Bhavai" is a Gujarati novel written by Pannalal Patel, set during the Indian famine of 1899-1900. The story revolves around the love affair between Kalu, son of Vala Patel, and Raju, daughter of Gala Patel, who are betrothed to other people due to societal pressures.

- *Love Story*: Kalu and Raju's love blossoms despite being promised to others, showcasing the struggle between personal desires and societal expectations.
- *Famine and Struggles*: The novel vividly depicts the hardships faced by farmers during the famine, highlighting themes of survival, endurance, and human emotions.
- *Climax*: The story concludes with the first drops of rain, symbolizing the end of the famine and offering a glimmer of hope.

- *Human Endurance*: The novel explores how people cope with extreme hardships, showcasing resilience and determination.

Adaptation :-

"Manvi Ni Bhavai" was adapted into a Gujarati film in 1993





Reflection Questions :-




1. Is there any Translation available on fiction you choose ?
 
Ans.   Yes . Vi vay kantake was translate this novel  Into english.


2. While conducting translative reading , did you encounter any cultural issues or gaps ?

Ans.    Yes. Because this bookwas written in 1947.  And the story in this novel is happened in. 1856 so there is a gap between this and vi Vay kantake translate this novel recently so.  cultural words and religious words are hard  To translate. So there is a lot of cultural.   gaps and issues .


3. Did the problem of untranslatability or equivalence occur in the chosen fiction?

Ans :-  Translation Of any religious or cultural  Books . It's little bit difficult but not that   unavailable. We have find synonyms for    that word  or we gave footnote etc. Same  for this novel.


4. Which tools and sources were used while conducting the Translation?  Were they effective ln achieving accuracy?

Ans :-  I'll used google Translation, Ai and chat gpt . They all are shows different.Meaning of the words . It's little bit effective in achieving accuracy.  


5. Describe your experience as a translator. 

Ans:- i learned a lot from this task and i got the chance to know about the book which i choose. 
As a translator it's little bit difficult to translate such cultural or religious book . But I'll got lot of information about that ancient time .knowing  about the author  , life style etc. 




Conclusion:- 
          I learned a lot of things . Knowing cultural words, Rituals  life style of 1856 ' s people.  Got information about author.  And for understanding Translation in better way that's why i choose this cultural novel . Because pannalal patel used so much cultural words in there work. It was a great experience while doing this task.
